BAD TYMES
EXCERPT 2
"The Interview"

by: L. Garcia
SET UP:  Flaco goes to his first job interview.  He is on time but the manager makes him wait.

Interior:  Fast Food Restaurant-Day

Flaco stands up and puts his hand out to shake.  Joe ignores it and sits down at his seat.  Flaco pulls his hand back and sits down.

Gina watches them.

JOE:
I don't remember you turning in an application?

FLACO:
I didn't turn it in myself.  I had a friend turn it in for me.
(glances at Gina)
I had turned in about thirty applications but the one that I didn't gets me a call to schedule an interview.  That was yours.

JOE:
(sarcastically)
What a coicidence?
(beat)
Have you ever been convicted of a felony or crime?

FLACO:
I've never been arrested.

JOE:
(mumbles to himself)
You must run fast.
(beat)
Tell me why you want a job here?

FLACO:
(nervous)
My jefa needs help supporting our family of five-I mean four.  I also need a job because I'm not going to school anymore...

JOE:
(interupts)
Why not?

FLACO:
Personal difficulties with the teachers.

JOE:
What's that?  Too much detention?

FLACO:
No...Too much discrimination and one gun from the desk pointed at my head.

JOE:
What school is that?  Norwalk?

FLACO:
That shouldn't matter-One bad teacher doesn't make it a bad school.

Gina continues to watch as Joe opens his folder and scoffs.

JOE:
Why don't you go to Norwalk High?  Do you have problems there with rival gangsters?

FLACO:
My school was known for a better education-That's why my jefa sent me there.

JOE:
What were your grades?

FLACO:
B's and C's.  What's that got to do with anything?

JOE:
I don't really get the feeling that you would work hard for my company-If you can easily drop out of school, how do I know that you won't easily quit here or not do your best job?

Flaco's face drops, disapointed.

Gina scoffs from the cashier counter.

FLACO:
I don't think you really gave me a chance to begin with.

JOE:
If you really wanted a chance, you would have came better dressed.

FLACO:
To come better dressed, I need better clothes.  For better clothes, I need money.  For that, I need a job first but I guess you wouldn't know anything about that with your nice suits.  I'm sure for you to afford that, someone had to have taken a chance on you.

Joe sits in silence, pulling out a piece of paper and closing the folder in front of him.

FLACO:
(politely)
Thanks for your time.

Flaco walks away.
